Ethiopia: Gambella to host national HIV/AIDS Day

Addis Ababa, November 26, 2014 (GMN) – Gambella will host national HIV/AIDS Day of 2014 under the theme “Let no one dies of HIV/AIDS”, the Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office announced. Joint Prevention Counselling Advisor Endeshaw Woldesenbet says the celebration will take place in Gmabella for a week starting from 29th of November 2014.


It is expecting that over 2000 people will voluntarily conduct HIV/AIDS test daily in the week long celebration, he stated.

According to Endeshaw, special attention will be given to the testing of pregnant women.

The report attributed that the decrease of media coverage on creating awareness and the harmful culture and unsafe sexual intercourses are the main reasons for the fast widespread of HIV/AIDS in the region.

The celebration will benefit to create awareness hugely for people engaged in development institutions to use condoms properly, he stated, adding that the disease spreads at a rate of 1.2 percent and approximately 700,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia.
